Explain the difference between front-wheel drive and rear-wheel drive.

 

Front-wheel drive (FWD) and rear-wheel drive (RWD) are two different configurations for the drivetrain of a vehicle. The main difference lies in which wheels are responsible for transmitting power from the engine to the road.


Front-wheel drive:

In a front-wheel drive configuration, the engine's power is sent to the front wheels. The front wheels are responsible for both steering and propulsion. This setup is commonly found in compact cars, sedans, and smaller vehicles. FWD offers several advantages, including better traction in slippery conditions, improved fuel efficiency, and more interior space since there is no need for a driveshaft tunnel.


Rear-wheel drive:

In a rear-wheel drive configuration, the engine's power is sent to the rear wheels. The rear wheels are responsible for propulsion, while the front wheels handle steering. RWD is typically found in larger vehicles, sports cars, and trucks. This setup provides better weight distribution, which can enhance handling and performance, especially in high-speed situations. RWD also allows for more precise steering since the front wheels are not burdened with the task of propulsion.
